Bursch's

Another hard to find favorite of mine. In the early 1980's we would finish our shift at the Red Owl Warehouse, then get our checks now Bursch's was just down the road along with the 908 and Bullpen, Archie's. We would cash our checks at Bursch's and walk from bar.

If you have matchbooks the 908, Bullpen or Archie's from Hopkins, MN I would sure like to add them to my collection.

Red Dog Saloon

Red Dog, funny until I put my glasses on I thought this was in Newport. Now I wonder if Newport came along in later years or if they are all unrelated.

Bonanaza

Eating at the Bonanza was always a special treat for my family when I was growing up. Bonanza was the first all you can eat buffets that I remember as a youth.

Eddie Websters

A request for a matchbook poster of Minneapolis bars was made by the Polka lady Bev Rambough of Polka Spotlight. I thought how neat I thought it would be easier coming up with these matchbooks, I was wrong it has been difficult I have had two people volunteer some real nice matchbooks for this poster, and I have come across a few my self. I was hoping to be able to include more of the Ballrooms Like Medina and the one by Waconia and several others from the outer suburbs, these are real hard to find, North East bars are also difficult. and I still want to include some like the 908 and Bull Pen from Hopkins.

Yellow Submarine

Hopkins Bowl Had a large marquee Bowling Pin that was some what of a land mark for the west side of town, at some point, I don't remember if it was when The Yellow Submarine that came in or the next owner Tuttles took the large Marquee down.

Lincoln Del

Rubens and Matzo ball soup, This was a best, I think they had 3 or 4 restaurants, St Louis Park( Minnetonka Blvd), Bloomington( France and 494), 12 and 394 would be another St Louis Park I want to say Edina, I just can't place it if they had one in Edina. Good Good food and the best people worked here.

Minnesota Twins, Baseball

A favorite is Minnesota Twins. Matchbooks were made for every type of business advertising, Another collection is football matchbooks they have a matchbook for each team and the cover is cut out in the shape of each teams logo or helmet.

National Tea Co

Hopkins, Mn housed several grocery companies in the 50's 60's and 70's National Tea, Red Owl, Super Valu, Country Club Markets, This building that National Tea was in was closed in 1970's because of as I recall either Asbestos or Creasalt contamination. I think at that time National Tea had pulled out of Hopkins and Gateway foods occupied the building, Red Owl filled orders for them untill they opened a new DC in Minneapolis, then Red Owl leased freezer and warhouse storage space to accomodate thier growing buisness, Rainbow foods took over the front office space and Wonderbread also warehoused product out of this facility. Rail tracks came in the building so it was convient for reciving large volume product. Hopkins was a hot spot for distribution and manufacturing because this is where East meets West on the rairoad tracks .

Hopkins House

Hotel matchbooks are easily available by the thousands, finding the one you want isn't so easy. this one took several attempts at online auctions, and once I got it another turned up through a friend. The Hopkins House holds fond memories for residents of this town it was where most wedding receptions and other banquets were held in its day, this building has been replaced by Condominiums in the 2000's

SuperValu

Growth describes this company, as the grocery business consolidated across the board Super Valu stood strong and steady. 2009 it is rated as third largest Grocery distributor. Super Valu has many DC's across the country. Hopkins MN. is one of them.

Hopkins Red Owl

RedOwl 215 E. Excelsior Blvd Hopkins, Mn This property is now the new home to Cargill Offices, The Red Owl warehouse was replaced in early 2008 and 2009 by three seven story office buildings, before Red Owl and Cargill This property was owned by Harley Hopkins who ran the Hopkins post office out of his house, The Hopkins train depot was within several hundred feet of his house and the post office, it is said the town really wanted the post office someplace else.

Snyder Drug stores

Snyder Drug store Corporate Office was located in the Red Owl Corporate Offices at 215 E. Excelsior Blvd Hopkins, MN before they changed the address in the 1980's for the 169 freeway to come through.

Applebaum's Grocery

Applebaums was a Twin city based retail grocery business, they also operated Rainbow foods and Holiday foods in the 80’s and 90’s they sold both Holiday and Rainbow in the 90’s.
Rainbows corporate office was located on the East end of Hopkins until they sold to Roundys in the early 2000’s Jacobs Trading Co, Opened there corporate world headquarters in the old Rainbow office in 2009
